Eat veg? Wish you could go out to a hip spot with your fellow omnivorous friends without feeling isolated or deprived of fun tasty food? Look no further. Every now and then I crave a dose of the Chic Chicago scene. So, last Saturday I indulged. My girlfriend andI headed to Sunda in the stylish River North district for a little “ladies night out”.
I eat predominantly vegan and Sunda was no threat to my plant based diet. It’s refreshing to know that one of the trendiest restaurants in the city has plenty of innovative options for a veg head like me. I’m seeing a lot more of this as I travel and eat out at some of the nations hottest spots. Veg is in. And when restaurants turn their heads, they are the one’s missing out.
Sunda’s sprawling dinner menu presents no less then 10 dynamic veg friendly plates that include an eclectic combination of exotic flavors, paired with ingredients from all over Eastern Asia. There are, of course, plenty of meat & seafood centric items available as well. Everyone wins.
Executive Chef Jesse De Guzman personally visited our table to greet us. The three of us enjoyed a quick Saki toast to precede the arrival of our food. That type of personalized service is noteworthy.
Our server knew the menu inside and out and was overly accommodating to our dietary needs, which only made our experience that much better. The "Bang Bang salad", which is a Japanese twist onthe traditional Thai Green Papaya salad, was memorable. We also thoroughly enjoyed the "Shiitake Edamame dumplings", Shishito peppers & "Veggie Q" roll.
Oh, did I mention the cocktails are phenomenal? Nahm Kim definitely knows how to craft flavorful ingredients with select spirits that linger on your tongue. Plus, he uses jalapeno, which is a personal favorite.
Whether you eat Veg or not, the tantalizing flavor combinations, attentive service and hand crafted cocktails paired with a chic sexy vibe makes Sunda the perfect spot to experience the Chicago scene. If you’re lucky, you may even get to send kudos to owner & local celebrity, Billy Dec.
